The Djiboutian Coast Guard has been retrieving the bodies of migrants who drowned off the Horn of Africa, following the sinking of two vessels in the Red Sea. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) confirmed on Tuesday that at least 45 people have died, with dozens still missing.
The boats, which had departed from Yemen carrying 310 people, were en route to Djibouti when smugglers forced the migrants off the vessels in open waters.
So far, 55 survivors have been rescued and are receiving medical and psychosocial support. Search and rescue operations are ongoing, with the IOM assisting local authorities.
This tragedy occurred just 150 meters off the coast of Djibouti's Khor Angar region, underscoring the perilous journey thousands of migrants from Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia undertake each year in search of a better life in Europe.
Smugglers continue to exploit desperate migrants, overloading vessels and forcing them into dangerous waters, resulting in frequent loss of life.
